SKILLS
International competitions among young people from various countries play a crucial role in internationalisation. These competitions not only offer countries and sector the opportunity to recognise their positions and levels within various disciplines but also challenge them to continuously improve their education programmes. Furthermore, it creates a platform for young people in which they can get to know each other and learn to operate within an international setting. Since a number of years, Turkey has been organising national competitions and is working on setting up the national organisation of Skills Turkey. In 2008, NIHA has supported these initiatives in which the Netherlands plays an important role not only due to the good relationship between Skills Netherlands and Skills Turkey, but also due to the Netherlands European Skills Promotion Organisation (ESPO). The preparations and realisation of the first Skills Europe competition in October 2008 in Rotterdam, to which Turkey sent the largest delegation following the Netherlands, further intensified the cooperation, which was secured in Istanbul at the start of the Netherlands Economic mission in November 2008. Here, in the presence of the Netherlands State Secretary of Education, Arts and Science Marja van Bijsterveldt, a cooperation protocol was signed between Skills Netherlands and Skills Turkey.
As the representative of Skills Netherlands in Turkey, NIHA coordinates the activities and facilitates the communication between the parties involved.
Euroskills: Skills for a strong Europe
The idea of creating a European platform for skills competitions maintained with WorldSkills since 1953, came up within Skills Netherlands in 2004. The idea was to further increase the quality and the attractiveness of vocational and technical education in Europe. European Skills Promotion Organization (ESPO) was established in 2007 to:
- create the platform aiming at the development and comparison of workforce competency levels with the European Commission’s political and financial support.
- encourage the excellence in the field of professional and vocational skills and craftsmanship in the European Union,
- increase the attractiveness of vocational education and training
- support the policy of “lifelong learning”.ESPO ‘s primary task is to arrange the European Skills Competition (EuroSkills) every in two year. The first EurosSkills competition was organized by SkillsNetherlands in Rotterdam in 2008.
SkillsTurkey
Skills Turkey was created by the Ministry of National Education General Directorate of Technical Education for Girls, the Turkey Construction and Installation Workers Foundation (İNİŞEV) and Gazi University. Turkey joined EuroSkills 2008 in Rotterdam with the organization of İNİŞEV. The former Euroskills 2008 Technical Delegate Mr. Uğur Erkuş has expressed that Turkey’s first time participating in such a competition would be important in the process of integration into the European Union. The Turkish national teams with in total fifty-two participants, competed in six fields. Regarding the number of participants Turkey was the second country.
In the competition, representing Turkey, Anıl Selamet was third in the branch of CADD Designer, Hakan İlik ranked fourth in the branch of “Welder” and Alican Yamanlar fourth in the branch of “CNC Machining Technician”. Students who did well in the competition in Rotterdam will represent Turkey in the World Professional Skills Olympics`.
